Clear mountain water can still carry Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and bacteria you cannot see, taste, or smell. There is no single method that handles every threat in every situation. Boiling, filtration, and chemical treatment each cover a different set of risks. The skill is knowing what each one removes, what it misses, and which to reach for given the water in front of you.
What you are actually treating for
Untreated surface water tends to carry three kinds of organisms, and they are not equally easy to deal with. Protozoa like Giardia and Cryptosporidium are the most common cause of backcountry illness. Crypto in particular is tough: the CDC notes it is poorly inactivated by chlorine and iodine at the doses you would use in the field. Bacteria such as E. coli are smaller and respond to almost any method. Viruses are smaller still, rare in North American wilderness but a real concern when traveling or near human waste, and they slip through most backpacking filters.
That hierarchy is why method choice matters. A treatment that crushes bacteria may do nothing for Crypto, and a filter that stops both protozoa and bacteria may pass viruses straight through. Match the method to the threat. The clearest stream can still hold Crypto, and the cleverest filter still passes viruses. There is no shortcut around knowing what each tool does.
Boiling: the most reliable method
Boiling kills everything that can make you sick from drinking water: viruses, bacteria, and parasites including both Giardia and Cryptosporidium. It needs no filter cartridge, no expiration date, and no clear water to work. If you can make a fire or run a stove, you can make water safe.
The CDC guidance is specific. Bring clear water to a rolling boil for 1 minute. At elevations above 6,500 feet, where water boils at a lower temperature, hold the rolling boil for 3 minutes. You do not need to boil longer than that; reaching a rolling boil already does the work, and the timed hold is a safety margin. Note that boiling does not remove chemical contaminants, so it is not the answer for water that may be polluted with anything other than germs. Filtration: fast, but know the pore size
A pump or squeeze filter forces water through a membrane that physically strains out organisms larger than its pores. The CDC says a filter with an absolute pore size of 0.3 micron or smaller removes bacteria and parasites. Most quality hollow-fiber backpacking filters rate at around 0.1 micron, which reliably removes bacteria, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium.
The catch is viruses. They are small enough to pass through these pore sizes, so a standard hollow-fiber filter does not remove viruses. In most North American backcountry that is an acceptable risk, since viral contamination is uncommon. Protect the filter from freezing and clogging
Hollow-fiber membranes can crack if they freeze with water inside, and the damage is invisible. In cold weather, sleep with the filter in your bag. Cloudy water also clogs filters quickly, which is where pre-filtering earns its place.
Chemical treatment: chlorine dioxide and iodine
Chemical drops and tablets are light, cheap, and a sound backup when a filter clogs or fails. They are not all equal against protozoa. Chlorine dioxide kills bacteria and viruses, kills Giardia, and is somewhat effective against Cryptosporidium, though Crypto requires a long contact time, often up to four hours on the label. Iodine handles bacteria, viruses, and Giardia, but is not reliable against Cryptosporidium. Iodine should also be avoided by pregnant women and anyone with thyroid conditions, and it leaves a taste many people dislike.
The practical takeaway: chemical treatment alone is a weak choice when Crypto is a concern. Follow the contact time on the package, and remember that very cold water needs longer. UV light and sourcing your water
UV pens disrupt the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and parasites, covering all three threats in clear water. The limitation is the same one that affects every method: they only work in water that is genuinely clear, and they depend on batteries. Cloudy water shades organisms from the light and the treatment fails.
Which brings up the step that improves every method. Pre-filter cloudy or turbid water before treating it. Pour it through a bandana, a coffee filter, or a clean cloth to drop out silt and floating debris, or let it settle in a container and draw off the clear water on top. The CDC advises filtering water before disinfecting it. Clearer water lets chemicals and UV reach the organisms, and it keeps your filter from clogging within a single trip.
Sourcing matters as much as treatment. Choose running water over stagnant, draw from above any sign of livestock or human use, and avoid water with an oily sheen or chemical smell, which no field method fixes. Choosing a method by situation
- Day hike, clear stream, North America: a 0.1 micron filter is fast and enough. Viruses are an unlikely risk here.
- Cold, fuel available, suspect water: boil. It handles everything germ-related and does not depend on a cartridge.
- Crypto a concern, no fuel: filter first, since chlorine and iodine are weak against Crypto. Chlorine dioxide as a backup with full contact time.
- Traveling abroad or near human waste: assume viruses are present. Combine a filter with chemical treatment, or boil.
- Cloudy water, any method: pre-filter through cloth and let it settle first, then treat.
The strongest approach in uncertain conditions is layering two methods: filter to remove protozoa and bacteria, then add chemical treatment or boiling to cover viruses. It is slower, but it closes the gaps each method leaves on its own.
