Water is the most urgent survival resource. Three weeks without food is survivable, three days without water is a hard limit, and in the field that window shrinks with effort and heat. A reliable filter removes the risk from natural sources. In most backcountry use, the Sawyer Squeeze is the only filter you need.

Filter vs purifier: when it matters
A filter physically removes bacteria and protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium) by passing water through a membrane. A purifier removes viruses as well, which are too small for standard membrane filters. Viruses in backcountry water are rare in North America and Europe: a filter is sufficient. For international travel where water sanitation infrastructure is poor, get a purifier.
In the field: all five options
Sawyer Squeeze: $35
0.1 micron, 3 oz, 100,000 gallon lifetime, attaches to standard bottles. The default recommendation. Backflush with the included syringe after every trip to maintain flow rate. Nothing in its price range does more for less.
Katadyn BeFree 1.0L: $45
0.1 micron, 2.3 oz, 1,000L per cartridge. The fastest flow rate at this weight, 2L per minute. Good for groups or high-volume filtering. Cartridge replacement adds long-term cost that the Sawyer eliminates.
LifeStraw Personal: $18
0.2 micron, 2 oz, 4,000L. The right filter for an emergency kit or as a backup. Straw-only use is awkward for filling containers, you drink from the source rather than filling a bottle. At $18 it is worth having as a second option in any kit.
MSR Guardian Purifier: $350
0.02 micron, 17.3 oz, removes bacteria, protozoa, AND viruses. Auto-backflushes with every pump stroke. Military-grade build quality. Used in expeditions and disaster relief. For standard North American bushcraft, the Sawyer Squeeze is sufficient and costs $315 less.
Grayl GeoPress: $90
0.003 micron, 15.9 oz, removes bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and heavy metals. Fill, press, drink in 8 seconds. No tubes, no technique. 250L per cartridge. The simplest water purification system available, worth it for international travel or casual users who want no learning curve.
